Often we get limited by our internal self-talk and our limiting self-beliefs. In many occasions, we talk ourselves out of situations that we could have handled. We are fearful, and let the fear conquer us. Facing our fears, and testing our limits might be one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. The more we realise how often we are capable of doing what we assumed we couldn’t, the closer we will get to our dreams.
“Do not stop because of fear.
Do not stop because of that inner voice telling you that you won’t make it.
Do not stop because of what others might think.
Push yourself and see it by yourself, with your own eyes.”
To live a more daring life, these words, I must keep them close to myself. I know that many others do too and I hope by putting them out, it might help!
One way I use to challenge myself is CrossFit. I’ve been attending CrossFit classes for maybe 18 months now, and each time the Workout of the Day (WOD) is different. I cannot count the time I felt I wouldn’t be able to finish it. We usually have between 9 to 20 minutes to do a certain workout and, often when I see it on the whiteboard, I am already dreading it in my head. Thinking that I wouldn’t be able to do the Wall Climbs, or that I am too weak to do that amount of Thrusters. The truth is that I finished most of these workouts. I also did not finish workouts that looked easy to me, I thought it would be done quickly and easily. To reinforce that point, in the CrossFit arena, there is a monster of the name of Mat Fraser (Fittest Man on Earth). I have seen an interview with him, and he made the exact same point. His trainer would prepare a workout, he thinks that he cannot finish it, but he still can. After all, it is natural to assess and try to determinate what we can or cannot do. The reality is that we are bad at it. So why trusting ourselves with such diligence?
We shouldn’t be stupid and risk our lives at every corner. But, we can dare to do more and push ourselves to expand the realm of our capacities.
The concept of Circle of Influence and Circle of Concern fits well here. As you will see below, the Circle of Influence is the symbol of our capacities as explained just above. The more we grow it, the more influence we have on the circumstances of our lives. The Circle of Concern is what we cannot change, nor influence. Many people get stuck trying to impact the Circle of Concern, and they do not work on their Circle of Influence. It is often the choice of people who lack accountability. They’ll focus on what isn’t their fault. So they have an excuse.
