At this point, we all have heard about it. “You must take small steps every day to progress in life!”. For a long time, I heard it but never really acted on it. Then things started to change, a daily small step at a time.
For the longest time, I believed that I am not good at creating routines. I tried to create a new routine, but I failed. I changed a bit the kind of activity, the time of time day and so on. But it kept failing. Until I realised it failed because I already had other (strong) routines in place. Routines in some cases that I had for years.
Between today and last September, I have changed a few things in my life:
- Waking up at 6h instead of 7h
- Reading, at least, 10 minutes a day
- Writing on my blog, at least, 10 minutes a day
- Meditating, at least, 5 minutes a day
- Finish one shower per day, with at least, 30 seconds of cold water (like really cold!)
If you would have asked me in August if Nicolas is capable of doing that AND sustain it, I might have laughed at your face. Seriously. I mean doing it for a week or two, yeah I would say I could do that, but not much more.
I guess you get the link to the title now, it was all through baby steps. Changing the routine slowly by surely. That allowed me to create more space for valuable daily actions into my life.
I initially committed to waking up at 6h30, meditating 5 minutes for 5 days a week and taking a cold shower. Then when that felt comfortable and integrated, I decided to move to the next stage. Which is waking up at 6h, which involves going to bed earlier instead of staying up late being tired. With that extra time, I added 10 minutes of reading and if possible 10 minutes of writing on my blog.
My commitments are small so I can make them every day. Most days I actually do a lot more. Meditation is 10 minutes by default, reading is often 15-25 minutes and blogging is often more than an hour as it includes writing, formatting, adding pictures and promoting it on Facebook.
These changes felt smooth and small because that I did them over time and with small stretches. That is the daily small steps idea. Small actions every day towards what matters to you or your dreams. And slowly but surely, you will be closer to them!
